Abbie and Eric were a couple who's wedding we shot this last fall.  As we were nearing the wedding, they were trying to come up with ideas for their engagement session.  Considering it was going to be on a beautiful fall day, we thought how fun would it be to go apple picking!  Being the fun sports they are, Abbie and Eric were totally game.

Before wedding photography was even a gleam in my eye, I grew up just up the bluff from the river in a small town SW of Minneapolis called Carver.  When I was a kid I always remembered the signs from a nearby apple orchard.  We had done a wedding there and gone as a family a few times.  Needless to say, Stacey and I thought Minnesota Harvest would be a perfect place to go.

We ended up with gorgeous weather and the whole place essentially to ourselves.  We got some really fun pictures, not to mention a couple bags of apples (which Stacey made delicious homemade pies with).  At any rate, after looking at these pics, I am beginning to understand why Adam and Eve picked the apple!

To top the day off we went with Abbie and Eric for pizza afterward and ended up running into almost my entire family by coincidence.  It was pretty funny considering it was right after I just got done telling them I grew up nearby.  I still wonder if they believe it was by chance and not planned :).

This past summer we did a really fun engagement session that we wanted to share.  Talaine and Jeff were planning a lakeside wedding and reception and wanted to incorporate that feel into their engagement session.  They decided on a picnic followed by a canoe ride.  We were eying the weather all day as clouds were rolling in and out.  We ended up dealing with some drops but were treated to a great afternoon all around.

One of the things that we have offered since the beginning of Staja Studios are engagement guestbooks.  When we started this, we actually couldn't find a place to print and bind them the way we wanted.  After two to three years of printing and binding them ourselves, we finally found a place that did the job the type of job we were looking for.  We have now been using VisionArt for the past few years for these books and couldn't be happier.  They are printed on enhanced matte paper so they can be signed with a standard pen and look fantastic.

In closing here is Talaine and Jeff's book.  All the guestbooks are custom designed incorporating your engagement pictures.  They include a blank side on page one that we mount your invitation to, white space for guests to sign and leave messages (similar to a yearbook) and also include a spread at the end where you and your fiance can leave one another your own special note, message, write your vows, etc.

A couple of weeks ago, we met Lyndsay and Brandon for their engagement session.  They were looking for something laid back, yet with a touch of an urban feel.  We met at our studio and utilized some of the fun surroundings there and then proceeded to St. Anthony Main to capture a few images there.  We had a lot of fun and we can't wait for their St. Paul wedding at the University Club Downtown in February!

We here at Staja Studios had so much fun pulling this project together for Casey and Dann.  They called a few months back and wanted us to photograph their wedding at the La Valencia in La Jolla, CA next spring.  In addition, they wanted something unique to show at their engagement party this past weekend.  We proposed the idea of doing a "fusion style" engagement session that would incorporate video along with our still photography, and they loved it.  During their session, we learned that Dann had studied French for many years.  We already had a mood in mind for the music and while editing with Ryan, our awesome associate/intern/video help, we came up with the idea of using some classic French cinema influences.  The end result is below.  Please let us know what you think!

Don't even recall how I ended up on your blog, but had to watch the whole video. REally classically chic, fun & technically tight engagement session. The fusion makes their whole story come to life. Canon 5d mark2 or Nikon d3s? I'm upgrading to include video soon.

PJ, thanks for the comment! We used the 5D Mark II for the video portion of this video. If you are looking at Canon you should also consider the 7D and 1D Mark IV. I hope that helps.

Over the past few weeks, Stacey and I have been busy working on a couple of really fun projects.  With the help of our new intern, Ryan Johnson, and our lovely couple, Jenna and Greg, we jumped at the opportunity to try something new.  As a result, we are super excited to release our very first fusion engagement video!    We have learned a lot about what to do and more importantly, what not to do, but in the end we are quite pleased with the way our first attempt has turned out.  We would love it if you would take a second and let us know what you think!
